A MESSAGE FROM SPAA PRESIDENT : ATHENA SANTOS MAGCASE LOPEZ

I am honored and challenged to lead SPAA’s impressive roster of top-notch pioneers, established artists and young visionaries with great promise. SPAA has indeed evolved into a more energized and spirited group!

With this in mind, I will initiate a practical and down-to-earth leadership that will meet our objectives. My vision for SPAA, now on its 15th year, is to be able to legitimately ask for public donations by applying for a non-profit 501 (c) (3) status with the IRS. In exploring the area of government grants and to satisfy their criteria, we can have a DVD presentation of various group exhibits while highlighting members who have garnered awards and documenting their achievements. With the government grants, we will be financially self-sufficient and can provide more activities, opportunities and a means for aspiring visual artists to grow in skill and stature, which is an important objective of the society.

We will be innovative and creative with how we promote group exhibits by raising funds through saleable promotional materials such as greeting cards. At this very moment, our first book - Society of Philippine American Artists Selected Works 1, the brainchild of past president Lenore RS Lim and with the cooperation and teamwork of volunteer members, is now available! What better way to showcase the artists and their art!

We will empower ourselves with artistic confidence and productivity by honing our skills, satiating our eyes, minds, and hearts with new and bold ideas through museum, workshop and studio visits, and sharing our talents with colleagues by way of teaching and learning exchange activities. Thank you, and I look forward to everyone’s active support.

RONALD CORTEZ
PAINTER

A folklore artist, born in Taytay,Rizal but then he grew up in a quaint little town of Lucban,Quezon (Phils.) A son of two towns both known for their inspiring people and timeless heritage. He has been drawing since his grade school days. This pre-occupation led him to be a self-taught artist.

A "realist", Ronald returns to his hometown every-so-often and spend a great deal of time in the company of its inhabitants, observing their ordinary rituals, and in turn capturing those images unto large canvasses of colors and line and shadows. He has developed a flair for depicting traditional family ties, mores, and values.

The works of Ronald Cortez showcase the Philippine genre painting, capturing scenes of everyday living. He tells us what it is to be a filipino in folk traditions and in contemporary artistry. He has exhibited in major parts of the Philippines including United States.

"My objective in life as an artist is to offer my great respect to God as the Greatest Artist and give justice to his majestic creations!"

"In my work I get engrossed with the joy of playing with color and texture, combining media and materials, and the passion for expressing a feeling or point-of-view. My process is very intuitive even as I deal with issues---human, cultural or political. Objects and images from home are all very personal, but I use them to evoke larger themes and ideas about being woman of my roots facing global issues."

Her most recent exhibition, "A Journey to a Nation's Past," was presented by the United Nations Philippine Cultural Society and showcased "An Artist's Story of the Filipino People" at the UN Secretariat Lobby from March 24 to April 4, 2008.

Her Bayanihan Series was featured in Ben Quiñones's Asian Forum for Solidarity Economy at the University of the Philippines and an article in the August 2007 issue of Filipinas Magazine, "Through Athena's Eyes."
