12th Annual Show to open in July 18
The SPAA 12th Annual Members’ Show is
slated for July 18 to 29. (prospectus is attached). Receiving
day will be on Saturday the 16th. Opening and cocktails on the
28th and removal of works, the 30th.
The proposed brochure will be scaled down. The cost of a full
brochure or journal, as originally proposed, will be prohibitive
and will take weeks more of full time attention to make it to
our opening day. Instead we could produce desktop pages that
would feature briefly the list of participants and their art.
Please send by email or post, your updated photos and art bio,
and contact information, by June 18.

Baby Monroy just had a successful show at the Philippine Center
with her finger painting with acrylics. (she still has complete
set of fingers after that). Lea Padilla, a well known Northern
Mindanao artist was her show co-artist. This two ladies’
followed the well attended opening of the two-man show of Manny
Gamboa, and Davao Artist Carreon at the Philippine Center. Earlier
the spotlights were on Pablo Mahinay and Art Zamora and company
for the Mix of Five featuring the painterly side of Sculptor
Pablo. Brown Strokes series led by Julian Oteyza is ongoing
and will run till May 30. in Washington, DC.
Doctors are in
Also, drop-in at the Philippine Center for Glimpses, between
now and June 3, to gush at the watercolors of Manila artist
Edgar Doctor, and the acrylic abstracts and jewelry designs
of his daughters. I first met Edgar,
consummate water media artist, as member of the Manila group
of artists who gave painting clinics in the 70’s in Bacolod,
Philippines, with Lito David, Cesar Legaspi, Joe Joya, Raul
Isidro, Jess Aiko, among others. A few years earlier, I met
Mang Maning Rodriguez who came to Silay City on a one-man mission
to propagate printmaking in the Philippines. My first encounter
with these greats hooked me, and soon I picked up painting as
a hobby.
The Board of Directors at its meeting last
May 7, resolved to constitute the Board of Trustees. The members
will be chosen for their leadership role in the community and
most important, for their genuine interest in the welfare of
the Filipino American artists. SPAA members are requested to
submit names and for consideration. The trustees will advise
the SPAA and will serve as link to the community at large. The
Board will send invitations to the nominees and names will be
announced upon their acceptance.
