From the President’s desk:
A note of thanks to Dr. Mars and Cora Custodio, who graciously
opened their lake house for our SPAA Summer Picnic
for the second year. We wish them good health and good luck.
We enjoyed their hospitality and company.

Members on the spotlight
**Lito David was recently selected by the Board of Directors
of the Hudson Artists of NJ, Inc., to receive the “Artist
of Year Award” for 2005. The award will be given during
the 52nd Annual Regional Exhibit of the HA in Bayonne, NJ, on
October 17th. Lito will receive a bronze plaque, cash, and interview
for a feature article in the Jersey Journal. A corner of the
Bayonne Library/Gallery will be devoted to his works. Congratulations!
**Dulcie Dee has been doing group shows in galleries around
NYC. Her latest one opened Sept. 10 at The Body Archive Gallery
at #9. Ninth Ave. NYC. Visit her new site at www.deedulcie.com.
**Call for prayers for the healing of Eman Rodriguez, Mang
Maning’s son. AKA Boy, he is a noted artist in his own
right, and a founding member of the SPAA. He was hospitalized
two weeks ago for a serious ailment. We unite our prayers with
wife Gemma and family during this difficult time.
*** I’m sorry to miss this same APPNY grand event last
August 21 due to my family’s celebration on the same day
in Bergenfield, NJ. Dr. Rey Reyes is active with SPAA and is
President of The Association of Philippine-American Physicians
of NY, Inc
Lito Ballesteros at his Tutubi Gallery booth at the Philippine
Fiesta, Meadowlands Convention Center, NJ. Lito conducts the
annual children’s art competition in the premises, and
acts art consultant of the Fiesta.
** Lito Ballesteros represented the visual artists in the recent
Philippine Fiesta, last August 21 and 22, at the Convention
Center in Secaucus, NJ. The huge annual event draws thousands
of Filipinos in the Tri-State area. Lito has a booth for his
Tutubi Gallery, and supervises the children’s art competition
He has been doing this for many years now. No wonder Lito is
the most recognizable artist among Filipino-Americans nowadays.
Little known fact; Lito’s maternal grandfather is Fernando
Amorsolo. An old saying goes, “The fruit cannot fall too
far from the tree.”
**Jeff Berman is another (very) busy artist in mixed media
works (digital photography and painting). He recently reported:
“My artwork that has been on display at the International
Dance Festival has really caught the attention of the Dance
community. My work is now in the collection of choreographers
and dancers in both the U.S. and Europe. The foundation for
the IDF is now in the process of producing limited edition prints
of my artwork and collections of post cards of the dance performances
to be on sale to the public. It also looks like I will have
other venues to display the original new art that I will be
producing.”
If you remember Jeff, he exhibited with us with Dr. Rey and
Charito Reyes at Dix Hills, home in Long Island, NY with the
APPNY.
**Julian Oteyza. Our member based in Washington DC and a multi-talented
artist has expanded his interests to moving images. We’re
now familiar with his unique guitars and his “dyslexic
“ paintings, and the “Palabok” series of art
exhibits. He reports:
“An evening with internationally awarded, independent
Filipino film maker, Kidlat Tahimik, organized by Tutubi Productions
(Julian Oteyza and Linda Pirrone), American Legion Post 139,
3445 N. Washington Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22201, Sunday, 14
August 2005.” Kidlat Tahimik showed the progress in the
production of one of his films, focused on Enrique, the slave
of Fernando Magellan, who was in fact the first person to circumnavigate
the world. Kidlat Tahimik maintained that since Enrique could
speak the language of the people of Cebu when Magellan's expedition
reached the Philippines in 1521, it is plausible that he was
a Filipino. The film maker also lectured on his work and his
vision of independent films.”
**Teresa Rodriguez received the Citation of Excellence from
the NJ State Arts Council for the production of the Alexander
Calder exhibition, which the president at Montclair State University
mentioned in her speech as a "wonderful, wonderful!"
show in (this year’s) University day in front of over
1,000 faculty and staff . The Arts Council and the Dodge Foundation
are supporting the show scheduled to open in February 2006.
Tere has been promoted as Director of Galleries at MSU. Congratulations
and Good Luck.

**The duo from Lukban, Quezon are back. Romeo Cortez, Jr. and
Jowell Gaela will be at the Philippine Center on September 26
for their show “Colors From Our Hometown”. These
two young painters impressed their NY audience two years ago,
and have joined our show last year at the GSIS Museum in Manila.
They feature local life and colors of their town festival “Pahiyas”.

***Documenting your artworks: You may have
realized by now how critical it is to document your works no
matter if you’re a beginner, or a ”Sunday painter”,
or a serious pro, to always take quality photographs of your
work and keep data on that particular work. Photographs in slides
(keep two master slides) are still the required form by gallery
curators and competitions sponsors, although digital images
are slowly getting acceptance. Invest on a 3 megapixel camera
for basic documenting and digital experimenting, or 5 or higher
mp for enlargements, like Giclee of similar archival reproduction.
When sharing or posting in email or internet, keep your image
resolution low to prevent unauthorized reproduction of your
work. Also try to document yourself as artist too. A current
and simple resume or write-up about yourself. could go a long
way. Only a handful our members have responded to my call for
materials for the SPAA brochure. Please send them to me as soon
as you’re able.
"Fall is here. Sharpen your pencils and pick
up your cameras and brushes and paint away."
Members and friends who are getting this newsletter by post
mail, get on to the amazing world of internet. Notices, bulletins,
etc. of interest to our members could be forwarded quickly.
Till then. See you all in October. Keep on painting.
